ContactsLaw uses a bootstrapper application (a small executable that launches the main program) to facilitate setup, deployment and launching of the main application.

It provides the following functionality:
  • Installing a local copy of ContactsLaw
Relevant to installation via the DDM only; unpacks the application files required to run ContactsLaw and installs them for all users on the machine. In doing so, creates a desktop/start menu shortcut and adds an entry to the Programs and Features list in the Control Panel.

  • Checking for updates
Relevant to installation via the DDM only; checks to see whether an updated version of ContactsLaw is available and, if so, installs it before launching the new version.

  • Launching with elevated permissions
When User Account Control (UAC) is enabled under Windows Vista and Windows 7, ContactsLaw must launch with elevated permissions in order for certain features (such as integration with Microsoft Outlook) to work correctly. The bootstrapper application ensures that the user is prompted to grant these permissions.

  • Optimising performance
Following its initial installation, and on each update, the bootstrapper application will generate native images to improve the performance of the application. This process is optional (but preferable), and can be aborted by the user.
